Kartikeya

Kartikeya Prayers

Kartikeya, also widely known as Murugan in South India, Skanda, or Subrahmanya, is the Hindu god of war and the commander-in-chief of the army of the devas (gods). He is the elder son of Shiva and Parvati (though sometimes depicted as younger than Ganesha in some traditions). He was born to defeat the powerful demon Taraka, who had been granted a boon that he could only be killed by a son of Shiva. Kartikeya is typically depicted as a youthful, handsome deity, often with six faces (Shanmukha) and twelve arms, symbolizing his ability to simultaneously engage in multiple tasks and his comprehensive knowledge. His primary weapon is the divine spear (Vel), and his vahana (mount) is a peacock (Paravani). He is revered as a protector of righteousness and a giver of courage, strength, and victory. He is especially prominent in South India, particularly among Tamil communities, where he is considered the patron deity.
