Shani is one of the Navagrahas (nine primary celestial beings in Hindu astrology) and the deity of the planet Saturn. He is the son of Surya (the Sun god) and his shadow consort, Chhaya. Shani is revered as the god of justice, discipline, and retribution, responsible for delivering the results of one's actions (karma), both good and bad, through appropriate punishments and rewards. While often perceived as a feared deity due to his challenging astrological periods (like Shani Sade Sati), he is also considered a benevolent giver of ultimate justice, humility, and spiritual growth. He is typically depicted as dark-complexioned, sometimes lame, and rides a large black crow or raven. His symbols include iron, which is his associated metal, and black clothing. Devotees often propitiate Shani to mitigate negative karmic influences and seek his blessings for discipline and perseverance.
